Since it's last Dance Copyright workshop in Barbados as part of the Caribbean Educative Arts Festival in 2010, the Choreography is Copyrightable team continues to work behind the scenes to develop the caribbean dance space.
The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts has thrown full support behind the project by providing the initiative with a dedicated space for the region's first Dance Notation Collection and currently working with Mr. Marlon Simms to develop a strong Labanotation course offering at the Dance School.
It is the long term view of the CIC team to have the physical space - the Dance Notation Collection - serve not just dance school students but also choreographers from the wider dance community.
The space will provide students of the dance school with a specific area to access reference material on notation and provide technological support by offering direct access to the Labanotation software on a specially dedicated DNC Apple computer available in the space.
The team members that the DNC will also come to house notation information on works by local and regional choreographers - similar to what is done at the Dance Notation Bureau in the US.
With the support of the College some furniture and technological resources have already been secured for the space and the team is currently working closely with the Head Librarian of the College to secure well needed reference materials and conduct special training of personnel.
The CIC team members are keen on continuing to offer workshops in the area of dance and copyright to contribute to the development of a generation of dance practitioners aware of copyright and how it works to protect them as creators of art.
The official opening of the Dance Notation Collection will happen later this year.
