BRAT (Brittany-Leticia James)

Lover of cultures. Maker of worlds.

I am a USA based dance artist with Nevisian and Grenadian roots. My current focus is exploring the issues women have to address when the subject of babies pops up.

Everyone should be dancing. With the many cultural ties dance has with its environment it’s amazing everyone isn’t dancing. People are standing still, immobilized by fear. The fear of embarrassment keeps people from experiencing one of the most essential parts of human existence-Connecting/Relating/Communicating with others. Dance speaks volumes and communicates clearly even with language barriers. Everyone has the ability to be brave and move. Revealing this potential to the frozen many is my goal.

Revealing the power of movement to the frozen many is my goal. My work encourages movement mentally, socially, and physically. My piece on racism called on people to question the subtle ways in which racism is working in this country through a series of questionnaires and movement experiments. The result was a dance work that informed its viewers that though the oppressions create different experiences the feelings faced by both groups are the same. The “Human Healing Experiment” investigated what happens when we allow ourselves to heal from hurt versus when we don’t, and why do the majority of us live with unhealed wounds. For the findings to be revealed observatory verbal audience participation was made mandatory. “HomeBody” was a work that expressed that when you are at home with yourself you can be at home anywhere. To get everyone feeling at home in their own bodies they were are invited to join in the dancing on stage.

Being overly preoccupied with moving people is something I am guilty of. For the most part we have become complacent. This lack of reaction has created a downward spiral of destruction that I want to change. Our complacently keeps us stagnant and moves us backwards towards extinction. I just want us to Keep It Moving
