MARITZA PEREZ-BECERRA is a multidisciplinary Cuban artist working with Installations, Photography, Video, Objects, and Painting.
Her work explores the dynamics of power relations , meta-history and myths, mass migrations, and the non-linear continuity of memory and geography, people and places.
She earned a MFA from San Francisco State University, and a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in California and studied at the Escuela de Artes Plasticas and the Arts Students League in San Juan Puerto, Rico .
Perez-Becerra is the recipient of the Cintas Fellowship in Visual Arts, Cintas Foundation, New York, NY, the San Francisco Art Commission: Art in Public Places Grant, San Francisco, CA, The Gibraltar Point International Art Residency, Toronto, Canada, the Artists in Education Residency program,
Southern Exposure Gallery, San Francisco, CA, and Highlander Research and Education Center Farm Internship, New Market, TN.
She has exhibited widely in Galleries, Museums, and alternative spaces in the United States and abroad, and her work appears in "Lesbian Art in America: A Contemporary History", "Dimensions of the Americas: Art and Social Change in Latin America and the United States", "Yesterday and Tomorrow: California Women Artists", and other publications.
Public collections includes the Frost Art Museum, Miami FL,and the The Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, San Francisco, CA.
Perez-Becerra has created backdrops for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The San Francisco Academy of Sciences Museum, and designed sets for the play : "Single Black Female" by Lisa B. Thompson,directed by Coleman Domingo for Theatre Rhinoceros, San Francisco, CA.
As part of her interest in urbanism and architecture the artists, designed and converted an 1936 factory shell space in West Oakland, California into her private residence and art studio. She is also a restorer of fine arts and antiques, has renovated several several residential spaces, and loves organic gardening.
