Patricia Saunders

Associate Prof. of English University of Miami

Born in Trinidad, Patricia Saunders has been living and working in the U.S. for most of her life. My research areas include Caribbean nationalism, Jamaican Popular Culture, National Identity and Sexuality in Caribbean Culture. My first book, "Alien-Nation and Repatriation: Translating Identity in Anglophone Caribbean Literature" was published in 2007 and examines questions of migration, gender and national identity in Anglophone Caribbean literature. My current project focuses on Jamaican Popular Culture in the age of globalization. I am currently directing the Caribbean Literary and Cultural Studies Program at the University of Miami -- we recently hosted the Global Caribbean: Interrogating the Politics of Location Symposium in partnership with the Creative Caribbean Network and the Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami.

There are two important critical voices in Caribbean Literature and Cultural Studies that people should check out: Small Axe: A Caribbean Journal of Criticism and Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal. Anthurium is an on-line, open access journal edited by Sandra Paquet and Patricia Saunders at the University of Miami.

Check out both of these journals at: anthurium.miami.edu/home.htm

Re: Patricia Saunders

Dreams in a Time of War is a must read for anyone interested in understanding the impact of World War II on the lives of Africans, the struggle for independence in Kenya, and the importance of oral culture in the development of one of the greatest African writers alive today.

It was a standing room only crowd at Books and Books for N'gugi's reading and many stayed to hear the dialog between N'gugi and his old friend, the Zimbabwean writer, Chenjerai Hove
