Anja Marais

Visual Artist

Anja Marais’ sculptures and installations have an environmental approach that embraces the contradictions and similarities of the masculine and the feminine forces of our delicate world. Through an ancestral portal she examines the dichotomy and fragility of life by creating biosphere content that touches on themes of cyclical elements of fauna and flora, memories, genetics and life-death.

After graduating with an Art degree from the University of South Africa, Marais immigrated to the United States. Her work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and held residencies like Mino Art in Japan. She also has been a recipient of the Florida Individual Artist Grant and has been selected this year by the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs for the Creative Capitol Professional workshop program. She appeared in publications like the Florida International Magazine, Art in America and Artnews. Marais is preparing for upcoming projects which include a two man show in Maryland, a public project in Miami called “Giants in the City” and an art collaboration over Art Basel in Switzerland. She currently works and resides on the island Key West in South Florida.
