Visual artist, born in NY, living and working in the Virgin Islands since 1969 - have exhibited in museums and galleries around the world and participated in numerous biennials and triennials in the Caribbean region and Europe.
Current work involves collaborative and solo projects in multi media, which deal with migration and journeys in a personal and collective way and the impact of colonialism in the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean.
Recent work includes a video, Moments in Time, illustrating the timeless night sky subtitled with excerpts from Columbus’s 1493 diaries – sentiment, sex, and violence in the Virgin Islands. * Moments in Time]
Currently working on two video pieces, one entitled, On These Shores, which mixes colonial and modern music with images of colonial and other found figures photographed on the beach. The second is called The Swimmer, which deals with one person’s story of migration and the personal navigation involved in the “currents” of the Caribbean Sea.
Other projects are an installation piece called Silenced, composed of “stuff” – discarded items wrapped and “silenced” and others that have been stuffed and take on new forms or are just “silenced” and an artist’s book of conceptual projects to be called The Undone.
Some Highlights:
1999 - large solo show, Recuerdo, at Museo de las Américas in San Juan, PR. 2000 - included in Mitos en el Caribe in Cuba at Casa de las Américas. 2002 - planner/director of VIA COLECTIVA, first group show of VI artists at a museum in PR at Museo de las Américas. 2005 - began a collaboration with Edgar Endress and Lori Lee, Transfer Project, that deals with the 1917 Transfer, from the Danes to the US, of the Virgin islands – to date there have been 5 editions of this ongoing project. 2006 - School of Visual Arts in NY on a residency, started working in video and digital media. 2008 - included in Luis Camnitzer’s traveling exhibition, The Last Book. 2009 - co-curated, Daily Strife, at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts in St. Croix with Lisa Ladner. This show dealt with the varied stresses of Daily Life in the VI and PR. 2010 - director /artist of COMMON GROUND a public arts project and forum led by Kendal Henry of NY for the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts. Also in 2010 co-curated and presented with Sigi Torinus the first VIP Mini Film Festival of Virgin Islands artists and filmmakers and was included in the I Trienal Int’l del Caribe at Museo de Arte Moderno in Santo Domingo, DR.
