Sara Hermann

ART HISTORIAN AND CURATOR

At the present I work as the Visual Arts Specialist at Centro León in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

Previously, I was the Director of the Museo de Arte Moderno in Santo Domingo (2000-2004), where earlier to that I managed the Publications Department and was a consultant for the International Affairs Department (1992-1997). From 1992 I worked with the organization team for the Caribbean Biennials.

I’m mainly interested in the artistic production in the contemporary Caribbean, the curatorial alternatives and processes that entail a greater visibility and exposure of these productions and artists, visual studies and its bonds with art history, the re-writing of many histories and the migration of forms and ideas.

I have curated several exhibitions on Dominican and Caribbean art such as:
Particular Obsessions: Wifredo García (co-curated with Karenia Guillarón) Centro León, Santiago, Dominican Republic (2009); Post Industrial Dust by Myritza Castillo Irrizarry Espacio de Influencia, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (2008); Territorio de cuyas by Maria Clara Gaviria Quinta Dominica, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (2008); Suite Quisqueya, New Dominican Painting; Herbarium: Caribbean contemporary drawing, District & Co, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (2007); the public art Project Arte Urbano Sarmiento, with artists such as Quisqueya Henríquez, Jorge Pineda, Raquel Paiewonsky, MODAFOCA and many others (2007); Merengue Visual Rhythms Centro León, Santiago, Dominican Republic; El Museo del Barrio, New York, Art Museum of the Americas, Washington (2005-2009); Cuerpo del Delito. Museo de Arte Moderno, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (2003); Heroic dimensions: Art of the 60’s in the Dominican Republic (co-curated with Paula Gómez) Museo de Arte Moderno, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (2002).

I have contributed to publications and offered lectures in different subjects, among these:

I have a degree in Art History from the University of Havana in Cuba.
